>Understanding and Exploring the Social Media Jungle: Best Practices

>

With more and more social media sites popping up everywhere, the craze to have the next Facebook or Twitter continues to be relentless. Wikipedia lists ?€?some notable, well-known?€™ active social media sites  – ?€?some?€™ being 190 – and even has a separate page for defunct websites, showing that this competitive trend shows no mercy.

So with almost two hundred ?€?notable?€™ options out there, how do you know which to use for your site and how? Facebook and Twitter are the most obvious choices, but it?€™s essential to take time to create a strategy and see what works best for your particular needs.

Take time to find the sites relevant to you
Don?€™t just jump on the bandwagon. Investigate what?€™s out there, and make two lists of potentials ?€“ one for pages that require very little maintenance (e.g. a StumbleUpon link), and one for sites that require frequent updates and monitoring (e.g. Facebook).

When choosing sites, make sure they have an active following
Having active members is usually more important than having a large number of members, particularly as small sites give you the opportunity to gain prominence, enjoy less competition and let you take advantage of a more targeted audience.

Check the terms and conditions of each site carefully
If you have a design or photography site (for example) and you want to upload images to a networking site for exposure, clarify the copyright and ownership policies of the site first to avoid upsetting clients or losing ownership of your work.

Don?€™t be afraid of trial and error
When it comes to choosing the right social media sites don?€™t be afraid to have a go, but if something?€™s not working despite your best efforts then it?€™s time to move on. Make sure you don?€™t leave any blank pages behind you ?€“ ?€?saving the name?€™ can be useful but at least include a link and a logo so people can identify you. This is something to watch out for especially when you?€™re signing up with multiple usernames that may become useful in future. Try to provide a redirect link to your main account or user page where possible to help people get to the right place.

Make sure you decide and allocate resource effectively
Spreading your time too thinly means that profiles will get neglected, so do a test over a set period and cut out the less successful ones. An abandoned page gives the impression that you don?€™t care or even that you?€™ve gone out of business, and spam and inappropriate discussions can run riot. Having a bad presence can easily be worse than none at all, so opt for consistency, and don?€™t promise scheduled content you can?€™t deliver on.

Keep up to date
Sign up for newsletters and regularly read the official blogs of the social networking sites you?€™ve joined. That way you can keep on top of any new features and implement them before your competitors, and also be aware of upcoming changes which may affect the way you operate.

Think about the purpose of your social media
Are you developing your brand, using it as a direct sales tool, improving traffic or communicating with customers? This handy infographic from cmo.com explores the strengths and weaknesses of ten common social networking sites.

The most effective campaigns are original
If you have an idea that?€™s different to everyone else?€™s, don?€™t be scared to try it out; it could lead to a publicity explosion. If it doesn?€™t work, then take the time to analyse it and figure out why it wasn?€™t successful or come up with potential improvements. If you?€™re using social media to host contests, try getting some feedback from participants about what they enjoyed and what problems they faced (if any)  to gain more insight into user experience.

>How to use non-standard fonts with Blogger

>

A question I’m asked a lot is how to use @font-face (or other font-replacement techniques) with Blogger.

Now I have to admit, after dozens of failed attempts, heavy experimentation and keyboard-bashing I was almost ready to give up on this and admit defeat. Most of the techniques I tried were either unreliable or simply did not work!

Luckily, @kernest and @abu_farhan came to my rescue via Twitter by pointing me in the direction of Kernest’s free (and premium) font-based service.

Why use Kernest?

When designing for the web, @font-face is the most-used technique for replacing boring standard fonts for stylish typographical styles.

Using @font-face we would need to find reliable hosting for the fonts we use in our designs that enables us to utilize fonts across with no domain-restrictive policies in place. There are also permission and copyright issues involved with embedding fonts in web pages, making the whole process even more complicated. Particularly as @font-face doesn’t play too well with Blogger hosted sites…

Kernest is a free hosted service which we can use to embed a whole variety of free-licensed non-standard fonts in our Blogger template designs with ease:

Cross-domain issues are not an issue when using Kernest, though you will need to sign up for a free account and add the URLs for the sites on which you’d like to use your fonts so they’re properly referenced.

You don’t need to download or host any scripts on your own hosting account. Simply add the embed URL generated for your site in your Blogger template code and tweak the CSS for the textual areas of your design where you’d like your non-standard fonts to appear.

Kernest offers a huge variety of free fonts under various licenses including Creative Commons and GPL. Premium fonts are also available on a subscription basis. Browse by font style (ie: Serif, Geometric Sans, Oblique); by designer, font foundry or usage permissions.

Some of Kernest’s most popular free fonts include:

Chunk5 by The League of Movable Type (one of my personal favorites).

Komika Axis by Apostrophic Labs

Bitstream Vera Bold by Bitstream

MgOpen Modata Bold by Magenta Ltd.

How to use Kernest with Blogger templates

In order to use Kernest to embed fonts in your Blogger based sites, you’ll need to create an account and sign in.

Browse through the archives of fonts available and find a style you’d like to use in your site. Free-to-use fonts will display an “Embed” link beside the example text which opens a pop-up like this:

You can add a new site in which to embed fonts by pasting the URL of your blog in the space provided. After you’ve added a site, it will appear in the “Your websites” list whenever you are signed in.

Once you’ve added and selected your site, you’ll be presented with the font embed code which you’ll need to copy to your clipboard.

Add the font embed code to your template

Go to Design>Edit HTML in your Blogger dashboard and locate the opening tag. Paste your Kernest embed code immediately after this tag, like this:

At this point, it’s a good idea to save your template.

How to change fonts for headings, paragraphs and other text areas of your template

With the embed code in place, we can replace particular text areas of our Blogger design with the font(s) we have chosen from Kernest.

This is achieved by referencing the fonts in the CSS font-family tags. For example, to use Romeral for post titles, we could add the following CSS tag just before the closing tag in our Blogger template:

.post-title h3 {
??? font-family: ‘Romeral’;
}

The CSS tags you need to use for your preferred font can be found on the project page for each of your sites. You can access the project page while logged in to Kernest by visiting the “Your Websites” link at the top of every page.

Here are some commonly used text areas within Blogger layouts for which you may want to replace the fonts:

Description Reference
The header section (title and description) #header
Blog title h1
Post titles .post-title
Body of blog posts .post-body
Sidebar headings #sidebar h2
Sidebar text #sidebar .widget-content
Footer section .footer

Once you’ve added the relevant CSS tags to the section of your template, preview your design in your browser to see the font changes in action then be sure to save your template.

Do you use Kernest for your Blogger template designs?

If you’re already using non-standard fonts with Kernest, please let us know of your experiences using this free service and showcase your sites for others to see this technique in action.

Or if you successfully use an alternative technique, I’d love to hear about it so please feel free to leave your comments below.

>Just Started Blogging There are a Few Steps You Should Take

>

So I’ll discuss a little about the wordpress platform, themes, recommended plugins and some tips.

If you have just started blogging, there are a few steps you should take.

1. Activate the akismet plugin. This plugin comes preinstalled with wordpress but you have to activate it and get a wordpress key (which takes 2 minutes). Akismet blocks spam comments on your blog, so if you choose to enable comments on your posts (which you should) then this plugin is a must, and best of all it’s a set and forget.
2. Choose a theme. You could use the default theme, but it’s way overused. The ideal is to choose a theme that is very user friendly, with good link visibility, nice color contrast, and a nice and attractive layout. If you know how to design a theme or can change a free theme to your liking, then you should do so, unique content and layout designs are always a better choice than free themes that are probably used by hundreds or more. A good place to get themes is the WordPress Theme Directory. Another one is searching google for “free wordpress themes” 🙂
3. Decide on a permalink structure, permalinks are the actual links to your blog posts, and wordpress gives you a lot of flexibility here. For maximum SEO performance, you should simply choose “yourdomain.com/blog-post-title” but this really comes down to personal preference as I personally don’t think it makes that much of a difference, so you might prefer “yourdomain.com/year/month/blog-post-title” that is also search engine (and user) friendly. Whatever you choose, do activate the permalink feature because otherwise you’ll have those ugly query strings all over your urls.
4. Download and install the Google XML Sitemaps Generator Plugin. This plugin takes care of updating and submitting your sitemap to Google and other search engines. This allows search engine to know more about the structure of your website.
5. Download and install the All In One SEO Pack Plugin. This plugin optimizes your blogs output for search engine optimization. Optimizes keywords, page titles and more.
6. Install the Share This plugin or a similar social bookmarking plugin. This should go right after your posts along with a reminder letting visitors know they can subscribe to your feed. This way visitors have some options when they finish reading your posts. If they like your post, they will be able to quickly submit it to whatever social bookmarking sites they use or e-mail to a friend.
7. Create an About page. You should use this page to introduce yourself to the visitors, your background, your work, what you do and like and what people should expect from your blog. This gives your blog a personal touch that helps visitors to identify you as an actual human behind the blog. Also consider placing one or several pictures of yourself on the about page (or on a photos page if you prefer) as this also greatly increases the human awareness of the visitor.
8. Create a Contact page. You can simply put up a page with e-mail instructions or use a contact me plugin like Secure and Accessible PHP Contact Form. This gives confidence to the visitor that he can reach you if he so chooses and, like the about page, gives the human touch.
9. Create an account on FeedBurner for your blog and give your visitors a visible option to subscribe to your blog by RSS and by e-mail (FeedBurner takes good care of all this). This allows users to use an rss reader or just get your posts by e-mail. Most visitors never return so you should make it easy and worthwhile for them to subscribe to your blog and receive future updates.

Well, those are 9 of the things that I think are most common and needed, but I could go on, you should familiarize yourself as much as possible with wordpress (or your other blogging platform of choice), try out new plugins and optimize your theme. It’s a work in progress, but you shouldn’t let that get in the way of your posting.

You could consider setting up a password protected subdomain and creating a clone blog for testing (or install it on your own computer) because once you start getting traffic you shouldn’t go trying new things on your live site where things could break giving your visitors a bad surfing experience. A clone blog is obviously just a blog installation that matches your actual site with the same theme, same plugins and a few dummy posts so you can do your testing.

Once you get your blog ready to go, all that’s left to do is start posting! You should make a nice first post, introducing yourself briefly and letting the reader know that you have an About page with more details. You should give some idea of what visitors can expect from your blog posts.

Now for some quick blogging tips:

1. Make constant posts. You should try your best to do about 3 posts per week minimum. This all depends on your ability to express yourself with words. If you’re good at it, then post as much as you can, daily or even bidaily. If you’re not, well, then try to make at least 3 posts per week.
2. Use post titles wisely. Your post title is very important as it’s the part that will be most visible to the web. Create informative titles, for more details visit to http://www.your-own-blog.com the words you choose here will eventually make your site rank on google for some or all of those same keywords.
3. Make medium to long posts. Not saying that you can’t do small blog posts, you can and should, but you should try your best to create full length and keyword rich posts. Write your best and biggest posts as if the were articles with a small intro, content and conclusion.
4. Post about other blogs. Read blogs about the same topic than yours and link to them and do your own spin on the post, agree, for more details visit to http://www.blog-and-ping.com disagree, whatever. Basically try to engage in friendly debates with other bloggers.
5. Leave them wanting for more. End your posts with a small text about what you’ll be posting about next time. Be creative and suspenseful.
6. Proof read and spell check your post before publishing. Occasional typos are ok, but proof reading and using a spell checker should keep them to a minimum.
7. Have fun! You should be having fun blogging. If you’re just starting you can probably feel a little intimidated or sometimes don’t knowing what to post. But you shouldn’t stress to much about it, just take a break and post some other time. Blogging should be relaxing not stressful. Find inspiration around you.

Well and that’s it, there you have just some blogging tips to get you started. These are of course mostly geared to blogging beginners. You can do much more with blogs and use the blogging platform to create other type of niche sites and adsense sites but that is topic for a whole different article.

>Blogging- so Much More Than Just Writing

>

Blogging.  Many people think that blogging is as simple as sitting down at the computer and typing up a quick little blurb and then moving on to the next one.  And for those who do a personal blog or who are not interested in either promoting themselves or their business or making money- it is.  But in order to create something substantial it is a whole lot more than that.

Research

To write an informative blog post is not as easy as it might seem to be.  You have to strike the right combination and not only keep your readers interested but teach them something they did not previously know.  Every writer has their own style that becomes more distinctive as time goes on but getting into that flow takes time.

Even before writing a blog post a lot of time can be invested in research. This research can include clarifications on the subject you are writing about such as date details, a review of a product, an overview of notes taken previously on the subject, or just an overall gathering of the thoughts in your head.

Once you have have a more concrete idea about your topic the research on the written part itself comes in.  What keywords are you using and are there any longtail keywords that will work well with your topic? What type of post are you going to write and from what perspective? And what headline is going to garner the most interest?

These questions can sometimes generate confusion and lead to writers block.  There are a ton of great tools and how to posts out there to assist you.

Interlinking and Proofreading

Now you have your post written one of the first things that you should do is proof read and spell check your post.  There has been a lot of debate about whether articles should be grammatically correct and the spelling error free but a post reads more fluidly and is more easily understood if it reads the way that it should.

Interlinking helps your blog out in several different ways. It helps to get your older pages looked at more frequently and to decrease your bounce rate. It also assists in ranking (although not as much as an incoming link).  Once you are done writing your post you can go back and pick out keywords and phrases that you can use to link to other posts on your blog. In the beginning this may seem tedious but once you get in the habit of doing this it will become second nature.

Outbound Links

Linking out to other blogs can be a time consuming activity- but one well worth the effort.  Outbound links can assist you in that they show your readers that your knowledge of your post doesn’t stop with what you are writing but with the knowledge of what others are writing about the same topic.  It can draw new readers to your blog as people you link to will generally come take a look at what you are writing.  It can also help build you up as an authority in your field.

Make sure that you give correct credit when linking to someone else and don’t just put the link in the anchor text without mentioning them or their blog. And it needs to flow smoothly with your post and make sense- don’t just put a link to put a link.

A great example of someone who uses outbound links effectively is Jim Regan at The Net Fool.  Every Sunday he writes Sunday Link Love and Announcements in which he writes about the week, gives five links to great posts he has read that week along with a little summary and finishes up with stock market and blogosphere updates and a look ahead.  These articles are all high quality posts and really strengthen his credibility.

Promoting

Last but certainly not least- promoting.  Promoting your blog can be the most time consuming part of of blogging itself if you are intent on steadily increasing your traffic. There are many different ways to promote your blog including article marketing, forums, social networking and bookmarking sites, and commenting on other blogs.

As you become more proficient in the ways that you want to promote your blog you will find that you are able to do way more in less time.  For instance, if using article marketing as a tool you can use article submission sites which automatically submit your article to thousands of websites, blogs, and directories.  Or if you choose to do it yourself you can have five different article submission sites open and copy and paste right down the line.  (Much, much faster than doing it one at a time.)

Participating on forums and social networks which allow you to use a link to your blog in your signature is a great way to promote yourself and create traffic to your blog.  Twitter is also a good source to promote but don’t get too tweet happy with announcing new posts- most of the people following you will also be subscribed to your site and you will be giving them a double whammy.

By using the concepts of attraction marketing and you will make your job that much easier.  You can also submit your post to relevant bookmarking sites and directories.

One of the easiest ways to promote your blog is to comment on other blogs especially those that use the comment luv plugin developed by Andy Bailey.  This is a perfect example of why headlines are so important.  With comment luv there is a line under your comment that links to your last blog post.  If your headline is intriguing you may be surprised by the number of clicks you get. (One tip here- if you are getting ready to publish a new post wait to make your comments until after you publish.  This gives you a fresh link especially if you have made a lot of comments since your last post).

Conclusion

Overall, it is clear that blogging can be very time consuming to those who take it seriously.  Bloggers that have learned how to take what started out as a fun past-time and turn it into a lucrative career have known this all along.  While every post doesn’t have to be a candidate for the Nobel prize you do have to be sure that you are using most, if not all, of these techniques in each one to gain the blogging success you are looking for.

The next time someone makes a comment about why it takes you so much time to write a little blog post you can just smile and think to yourself, blogging is so much more than just writing.

>Three Awesome Blogging Tips-power Blogging!

>

You know the page: it is provided by Word press as standard and a whole host of bloggers leave it unchanged. Why they do this is known only to them, because this is the first page that a large number of first-time visitors to a blog check out, and the reason why many of them leave without looking further. All you have to do is to say a little about yourself, who you are, and what your blog is about, for more details visit to http://www.your-own-blog.com why you feel qualified to write a blog about this topic and how you can be contacted. If your blog covers a particular niche, rather than being simply a log of personal comments, then your potential readers will want to know why they should believe what you say by reading..

There is nothing wrong with having a personal blog about your personal thoughts on things, but if you are presenting yourself as a form of expert on a specific topic, then you will have to persuade readers that you have a right to do so. You should use your ‘About’ page to do that. Another tip you should take is to claim your blog with Technocratic. This registers it as yours with Technocratic, and you can get a whole load more visitors. Since joining Technocratic most of my blogs’ traffic rocketed. It takes a while for new blogs to get going, but it’s a lot easier if you make use of sites such as Technocratic. The same is true of most of the social Bookmarking sites if traffic is important to you. If you are using a blog to promote a product, then this is essential. If you have a website then doesn?€™t get lazy and be content to run your blog from a hosting site such as wordpress.com. It is better to download the software from wordpress.org, and host your own blog. You have much more control over the look and feel of it, for more details visit to http://www.blog-and-ping.com and can use any of the thousands of plugins that are available online. You can also use any template you want, or even design your own. That way you get total customization of your blog pages, and can make it more distinctive than the majority hosted on Word press or Blogger’s site.
If you have tried and had problems downloading and installing it then send me an email. If needed I can take you through it online, or by telephone. These are the two main tips that any blogger should take if they intend to blog seriously. However, was I to provide the third most important tip for anybody interested in blogging, and then it would be to monetize your blog? Don’t blog for nothing. If your blog concerns a specific niche subject you can likely throw up one or two affiliate programs on your sidebar so that they appear with your new posts. A three column blog is useful for this, since your regular sidebar will generally be full of permanent links. If you monetize using Adsense, a three column layout is even more essential, since you will want a vertical block down one of the columns, in addition to some at the bottom and the middle. A good Adsense layout would be a column to the left or right of the main text column containing a vertical ad unit, a horizontal link unit at the bottom of the blog, and also a horizontal ad unit at the bottom of the latest post. You could also include a search box at the top or bottom of your main sidebar that allows a search either on Google, from which you get income.
You could also include one of your websites as a second search option, providing three
Altogether. The income might not be a lot, but most blogs with a few hundred visitors a day should be able to make from $10 to $20 daily minimum, depending on the niche. All you need are a few blogs like that. These are my three main blogging tips. Yours would likely be different, since blogging is a very personal thing, but if you take these three on board you will likely find that you will get more visitors, have more fun and also be able to put a bit put aside for the holidays or that unexpected bill that always comes at the wrong time.

>MLM Blog Traffic – How to Setup a Blog That Generates MLM Leads on Autopilot

>

This step by step guide will show you how to bring in network marketing leads using blog traffic – one of the most profitable and easy ways to generate leads. Read on?€?

Free Blogs

The best blog format you can use for the free blog model is Blogger.com. This is suitable for anyone who is building a home-based business on a tight budget and is easy to use and set up. Even though it?€™s free, it is still able to get loads of blog traffic.

Beware of the free WordPress blog – the administrators at WordPress don?€™t want people making money with their free sub-domains, so it may be best to avoid using this model. (If you want to make the best of using WordPress read the ?€?paid-for blog?€™ section below.)

Blogger.com is easy to use – just follow the instructions in 3 easy steps ?€“ 1. Create a Blogger account; 2. Name your blog (in other words give your blog a URL which will be yourblog.blogspot.com); 3. Choose one of their generic templates for your blog. There are loads to choose from and you can find one which suits the corporate image of your business.

The Paid-For Blog Model

The paid-for blog model offers some advantages, for example:

?€?    Your content is not owned by a third party. With Blogger there is the danger of having your blogs deleted by the administrators.
?€?    You will have complete control over the content of the blog and the traffic you receive.
?€?    There is more scope to customize your page, with the theme, styles, fonts and overall appearance and functionality.

Now you have decided which model to use, it is time to drive traffic to your blog.

Firstly, look for one way links as soon as you can. Look for other MLM bloggers using Google and Technorati and offer to either promote their products on your blog or request a Blogroll exchange. Remember, people tend to reciprocate when they know you have something useful you can offer in return.

Next, get some of your blog posts and rewrite them in article format. This will not only get you traffic and rankings from article directories and Google, but you also saves time because you don?€™t have to write the article from scratch.

The next step is to submit your blog to blog directories. Most blog directories require you to have a few blog posts up before they will approve your site, so make sure you have at least six posts posted.

TAG your posts with relevant keywords. These meta tags are picked up by the search engines and that way you can be found easily when people are searching for a particular keyword.

Be sure to write (or outsource if you can?€™t write them yourself) really good quality posts. You can get a lot of natural traffic through viral marketing if people start talking about your blog posts ?€“ or if they give you some link love.

Use link baiting strategies to promote your blog. This is when you encourage others to link to you on their blog posts. Again, you need to give them an incentive to do so.

Write short press releases and submit these to prominent press release sites. Some press release sites get approved very quickly and you might even see links pointing to your sites appearing on Google News!

Once you?€™ve completed the steps above you will be ready to monetize blog traffic ?€“ and this will even work long after you?€™ve stopped writing content.

>Blogging has gone through a great change in the past few years

>

. Free blogging sites are popping up everywhere and finding one that meets your every need is simpler than you may think. The key to utilizing a free blogging service is finding one that Google likes and will index often to increase your exposure.

Blogger

Blogging is quickly becomming a popular way to increase your search engine optimization and ultimately improving your on-line income. Blogs, originally known as a web log, can be about a wide variety of topics and usually consists of thoughts, opinions, and information on the topic of the blog. If used properly, a blog can help promote your product, driving traffic to your website.

Blogs do differ from traditional sites in that they are not composed of individual web pages connected by hyperlinks, but instead, they utilize a template where content is fed from a database. Each new item submitted to the blog is called a post and may include hyperlinks to your site. Posts support using tags or keywords so that your individual blog posts are organized into categories helping to improve web search functionality.

You are probably asking yourself, how can I market my business and site using blogs? It is easy, really. The most common and successful way to utilize blogs for your business is to create a blog page as your landing page. This will enable you and fellow bloggers to “converse” about your topic on your website. Each blog entry you make should include a hyperlink to your business site and should also include tags associated with the blog topic (which can also be connected with your business opportunity).

Think about this: if every blog post has tags and all of the tags are keywords associated to the topic of your blog and thus your business, then your blog just enhanced your ranking on search engines on the Web! That is free advertising to your website.

There are several free blogging systems that can be used to host your blog site. The most popular is Blogger, which is owned by Google. It is easy to set up and easy to use.

Once you have a blog site, your next step is to start blogging. The most successful blog post sites, whether you are blogging to promote your business or simply for pleasure should have ONE topic, be interesting, and be written in your personal voice. A single topic keeps the blog site more relevant to search engines and keeps consistency in the tags on the posts. The best way to keep your blog interesting is to write your post as if it were going to one person, like you are having a conversation with them. This engages the reader and invites feedback and comments to your site. The more visits to your site, the more you are marketing your business and gaining credibility.

You also have the option of adding affiliate links and Google Ad Sense to your site—which not only brings traffic to your site, it could also bring a secondary stream of income into your pocket!
