>What CSS3 Can Do For You: Animation and 3D effects

>

As CSS3 gains more buzz, more and more developers are finding great ways to utilize it. In my last post, I went over the great ways to develop buttons and how to effectively use imagery transitions. Now we will move on and talk about the great ways to use CSS3 for animation and 3D effects.

Animation

Applying animation into your website can make the site more fun to navigate through, and make your clients happy. With that being said, Flash files can take a good amount of time to build, and could slow your loading time down. CSS3 makes it easier to animate, without the hassle of building large files.

Mouseover and Transformations

Two techniques that are quite useful and easy to manipulate are mouseover techniques and transformations. To create the transformation look below:

css3 transform

(provided by The Art of Web), you would do the following,

CSS3 Tranform Tutorial

If you would rather make this for effect for FireFox or Opera browsers, simply substitute ?€?-webkit?€? for ?€?-moz?€? and or ?€?-o?€?. Although, for more intricate types of animation (which we will discuss below) only webkit (Safari and Chrome) support CSS3 animation.

To enhance a transformation look, you can use a mouseover technique. This will allow you to animate a box, button, image etc to appear as though it is popping off the page, or any other type of animation. It is also helpful for opaque and other types of special images. The Art of Web goes on to show a demonstration here.

Taking these principles even a step further, and you can provide more intricate types of animation. For instance, you will be able to see a rocket move across your screen (provided you are in a CSS3 supported browser).

CSS3 Rocket Animation

Matrix

Diving a bit deeper, you will find you can do much more with the ?€“transform command. A popular animation being featured across the web is a matrix type animation. To achieve this look, you can use the ?€“transform command to ?€?rotate each div to 90 degree display vertically. This way, each letter faces 90 degree angle too?€?. Here is the demo to see what this looks like (only webkit browsers, Safari and Chrome support this type of animation).

Check out the tutorial to see how CSS3 rotates the strings and defines the animations:

CSS3 Matrix Effect

Spinning and Rotating

Integrating CSS3 with simple Javascript can also produce great effects. To see this in action, check the link below. Note that this demo only works in webkit browsers.

CSS3 Poster Circle

To achieve this look, you will construct the three rings using, ?€?a simple JavaScript function that creates elements and assigns them a transform that describes their position in the ring. CSS animations are then used to rotate each ring, and to spin the containing element around too. ?€?

Using jQuery and CSS3, you can create spinning records, or any type of creative spinning object to get your visitors involved with the site.

jQuery DJ Hero

One more example of using these transitions and webkit effects is to create a clock?€”Javascript is only used to set the current time.

CSS Analogue Clock

3D Effects

Another of the many things CSS3 can do is creating awesome 3D effects. With movies like Avatar making a splash across the world, it?€™s no wonder web designers won?€™t try and create boxes and charts to create a 3D experience for their visitors. To create a cube like the one below?€”which also can rotate using your arrow keys try out the following:

CSS3 3D effect

For starters you will need six cubes to create the entire look. Each section (called a face) is then given a class and a number relating to the face. These six faces sit within a cube container?€”which sits in another wrapper. Click here for a full specification.

CSS3 Transforms

Implementing CSS3 transforms, ?€?allows you to do all kinds of 2d transformations on any element on the page, by utilizing custom CSS tags. This means you can rotate and translate DOM elements, but you can also use a generic matrix function to do whatever you want.?€?

Once again using jQuery as a partner with CSS3, you can create a similar effect to the cover flow of iTunes.

CSS3 iTune

The creator of this effect, Paul, describes how he got this effect, ?€?The refresh() function that updates the viewport does unlike other examples (i.e. flash coverflow scripts) not only handle single animations, but is capable of doing true half-state renderings. Right now, this is not shown too much in the demo, but it would be actually possible to change the next/prev keyboard behavior to not move from one item to the other, but render each single half-state in between.?€?

Charts

Combining 3D effects with animations, you can create some commanding looking charts. When creating charts with both animation and 3D effects, you can create the same 3D chart without animation using the same HTML code. The only difference between the two images is the CSS3 animation code.

Even the CS
S3 code is similar, ?€?the only difference is that we now need to rotate the ellipse, since the bars are rotated too.?€? Being able to create both a great looking 3D chart, and with not too much extra work add animation can give your clients a nice variety to what you can do. Below is a tutorial from Marco Kuiper, who created a 3D animated chart.

CSS3 chart

CSS3 is slowly shaping up to be very exciting. Being able to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to your business (freelance or not) can only generate more leads in the future. For now it is wise to study up on new techniques and get ready for the future of CSS.

>Let’s see what you’ve got!

>

The main reason I found for creating this blog was to show people out there that you can use blogger to achieve almost everything. I mean, You can use Blogger to create ANY type of website, and show any type of content, If you know how to tweak it and admin your content of course. With this idead in my mind I have decided to create “out of the box” types of templates and help users using it, so they can see on their on eyes what I am talking about…

So since my users have got the idea of my templates they started commenting here like crazy, asking questions, congratulating me, etc. Due to that great feedback, I decided to answer (almost) all the comments, give my best to help people and answer all the questions they have, no matter how simple they were for me.

A couple of days ago I tried to search google for people using my templates, I got around 3000 results, then I checked some of them, and for my surprisingly happiness, I found some many GREAT blogs that have modified my templates in such a beatiful way that I could never imagine. Some of them have even won awards!

So I was here just surfing the net around as I do everyday looking for inspiration and came up with this idea: As I can not find all the great people using my templates by myself, I will create a post here and ask people to submit their blogs, only they ones that they think that have a great design, and are using a template of mine of course. It’s up now!

After taking a look on what you guys have submitted, I will create a section on this blog with the top blog designs using my templates, with a text link to your site, and maybe a short description. The more people that submit content, the more the post will be productive, so please spread this post around using the many social netwoerking features here, including the “Retweet” button.

Submit your blogs!

Here’s what I want:

  • Name: Your website’s name.
  • Link: A URL to your website.
  • Description: Write a short description of your blog, what is it about?
  • Template: What template are you using? What did you change from the original?
  • Testimonial (Optional): If you want, Please write something about me, or my blog, like how I have helped you, or why would you recommend me, my blog or my templates to people out there.

Note: Please only submit blogs that have customized any template of mine in a good way, I mean if you have made it unique and have a very good taste, check this example for better understanding. The submission does not aply for those that are using the original version of any template of have a “incomplete” look of it.

Let’s see what you’ve got!

>5 Tips for Job Seekers on Corporate Social Networks

>

Business Network Puzzle

Anne Berkowitch is co-founder and CEO of SelectMinds, the leading provider of networking and referral technologies and of the recently launched TalentVine referral recruiting solution. You can follow SelectMinds on Twitter at @SelectMinds.

There?€™s a lot of talk these days about using social networks as job search tools as well as sources for recruiters and HR executives to scout talent. Many organizations opt to build secure, private networks for their current and former employees that provide a place for people to connect and refer opportunities, contacts and information to one another. Here are some tips to get the most out of these increasingly common company networks.

1. Remember Your Resources

While it may be natural to dive into the wider web in your job search, you might be better served to take advantage of resources and people you are already connected to. Many businesses of all sizes offer networks to connect current and former employees. Check in with HR heads of former employers and find out what networking tools they offer. In the battle for great talent, it?€™s in their interest to keep up with you and where your career is headed.

2. Present Your Best Self

When building your identity and reputation on a company network, it?€™s important to remember that these networks are professional environments that are rarely anonymous. While you may have shared some drinks at the holiday party in 2007, you still want to engage with current and former colleagues on a strictly professional basis. Remember to update your information (title, company, leadership experience, etc.) regularly, perhaps every quarter, and point it out to relevant people as appropriate.

Also note that while you’re maintaining a professional presence on internal company networks, your public social profiles on Facebook, Twitter and other sites will often be checked by recruiters before they make contact with you. We?€™ve all heard the horror stories — for example, applicants updating their status or tweeting before and after an interview with disparaging or confidential remarks about the company. We?€™ve heard about recent college grads who have thousands of photos on Facebook, many of which are not work appropriate. These are lessons applicants need only learn once. Showing some personality is important, but it?€™s a fine line.

3. Reconnect

Business Team Image

People are used to getting ?€?Friended,?€? ?€?Followed,?€? ?€?Connected With?€? and more on a regular basis, so reaching out to past colleagues with whom you’ve worked should be well received. It?€™s a great way to share opportunities, personal and professional news, and stay up to date on happenings at your company. When you join a company network, spend some time identifying colleagues and friends within the organizations and acknowledge them on the network.

The foundation of many workplace relationships is gained in the first few days working together. A vendor my company works with recently had an influx of new hires due to business growth. The new team they assembled is full of characters and they promote camaraderie as an essential piece of their corporate culture. These employees are not just all Facebook friends but they?€™re neighbors, they Follow each other on Twitter, retweet each other, etc. They are connected personally and online in a way we know will continue even if one of them should make a career move.

4. Show Your Self-Motivation

As everyone knows, finding a job is work in itself. If you want to get advice from a former colleague or talk about business connections or job opportunities, you have to reach out. (Re)connect online and then consider setting up a get-together with former colleagues. Being outgoing and organized is a quick way to get recognized — a factor that’s sure to pay off in the future.

In-person meetings always go farther than a phone call ever could. For HR managers who work at large, global businesses, it?€™s nearly impossible to meet candidates face to face. But if you?€™re an executive and someone local is asking to meet up, it?€™s a great activity to make time for. I recently heard about a young job seeker who wanted to relocate and found out the local director at her dream firm had gone to a competing high school. That connection alone (pointed out in an e-mail she sent him when she happened to be in town) got her in the door and ultimately, the job itself.

5. It Can?€™t Hurt to Ask

Given the professional nature of company networks, it?€™s more common and expected for the topic of job openings and hiring to come up. Don?€™t be afraid to ask your connections how they got their newest job, why they left a company, or if they would be willing to make an introduction for you. Understand that these networks create mutual relationships, so be sure to offer connections, guidance and thoughts to others — engendering good will when it comes to a professional network goes a long way.

A woman my company works with has had previous high profile jobs in her field. As a result, many people know her and ask her for favors. The one she tells us she always obliges is giving honest answers to people who are considering going to work for her previous companies. Often these connections come through people she may need a favor from someday too, so it?€™s a valuable practice to help past companies find great talent, even though she’s already left.

However, if you do it correctly, you should be making money on a continual basis once you get the hang of it. If you are new to the world of blogging and want to get started in this type of activity, the following will provide some helpful blogging for money tips for beginner bloggers to consider.

For all of the beginner bloggers out there, one of the biggest mistakes which those new to this online type of industry make is to blog about topics foreign to them. It is best to blog about what you know. Doing so will help to ensure that you bring more and more site traffic to your blog and help to keep them there. For more help visit to: www. blogers-guide-to-profit.com. Also, if you are hoping to make money via your blog, the best way to do so is to stick with well-known topics as you will have more visitors and therefore more opportunities to sell your associated products or acquire commission from outside companies using your blog.

Although some bloggers make money on their own through their blog, others like to involve outside companies when blogging for money. Revenue building activities such as affiliate programs and pay per click programs involve the use of outside companies with your blog content. If blogging for money, one of the best things you can do as a new blogger is to involve outside companies via one of these aforementioned programs. You really do not have to know too much about blogging at this point as these programs are pretty self-explanatory and the outside companies handle most of the transactions. Therefore, while you are getting used to blogging you can still be making money at the same time.

Beginner bloggers should also be aware of the fact that blogging for money may take a few different moneymaking ventures in order to gain enough monthly income from doing so. Therefore, it is best to take advantage of more than one moneymaking venture when you blog for money. For example, you may want to sell your own products via your blog all the while partnering with outside companies to make money through that route.

As a beginner blogger who is interested in blogging for money, you should know that you will not become rich after two weeks of earning money through your blog. It will take quite a few months in many cases before you see a steady income coming in. With that said, do not get discouraged as blogging for money can be quite a lucrative job opportunity and one which may just take a little time to get started. In the end, blogging for money is a great way to set your own hours, work from home and bring money in while engaging in a thought provoking activity.

>Blogging- so Much More Than Just Writing

>

Blogging.  Many people think that blogging is as simple as sitting down at the computer and typing up a quick little blurb and then moving on to the next one.  And for those who do a personal blog or who are not interested in either promoting themselves or their business or making money- it is.  But in order to create something substantial it is a whole lot more than that.

Research

To write an informative blog post is not as easy as it might seem to be.  You have to strike the right combination and not only keep your readers interested but teach them something they did not previously know.  Every writer has their own style that becomes more distinctive as time goes on but getting into that flow takes time.

Even before writing a blog post a lot of time can be invested in research. This research can include clarifications on the subject you are writing about such as date details, a review of a product, an overview of notes taken previously on the subject, or just an overall gathering of the thoughts in your head.

Once you have have a more concrete idea about your topic the research on the written part itself comes in.  What keywords are you using and are there any longtail keywords that will work well with your topic? What type of post are you going to write and from what perspective? And what headline is going to garner the most interest?

These questions can sometimes generate confusion and lead to writers block.  There are a ton of great tools and how to posts out there to assist you.

Interlinking and Proofreading

Now you have your post written one of the first things that you should do is proof read and spell check your post.  There has been a lot of debate about whether articles should be grammatically correct and the spelling error free but a post reads more fluidly and is more easily understood if it reads the way that it should.

Interlinking helps your blog out in several different ways. It helps to get your older pages looked at more frequently and to decrease your bounce rate. It also assists in ranking (although not as much as an incoming link).  Once you are done writing your post you can go back and pick out keywords and phrases that you can use to link to other posts on your blog. In the beginning this may seem tedious but once you get in the habit of doing this it will become second nature.

Outbound Links

Linking out to other blogs can be a time consuming activity- but one well worth the effort.  Outbound links can assist you in that they show your readers that your knowledge of your post doesn’t stop with what you are writing but with the knowledge of what others are writing about the same topic.  It can draw new readers to your blog as people you link to will generally come take a look at what you are writing.  It can also help build you up as an authority in your field.

Make sure that you give correct credit when linking to someone else and don’t just put the link in the anchor text without mentioning them or their blog. And it needs to flow smoothly with your post and make sense- don’t just put a link to put a link.

A great example of someone who uses outbound links effectively is Jim Regan at The Net Fool.  Every Sunday he writes Sunday Link Love and Announcements in which he writes about the week, gives five links to great posts he has read that week along with a little summary and finishes up with stock market and blogosphere updates and a look ahead.  These articles are all high quality posts and really strengthen his credibility.

Promoting

Last but certainly not least- promoting.  Promoting your blog can be the most time consuming part of of blogging itself if you are intent on steadily increasing your traffic. There are many different ways to promote your blog including article marketing, forums, social networking and bookmarking sites, and commenting on other blogs.

As you become more proficient in the ways that you want to promote your blog you will find that you are able to do way more in less time.  For instance, if using article marketing as a tool you can use article submission sites which automatically submit your article to thousands of websites, blogs, and directories.  Or if you choose to do it yourself you can have five different article submission sites open and copy and paste right down the line.  (Much, much faster than doing it one at a time.)

Participating on forums and social networks which allow you to use a link to your blog in your signature is a great way to promote yourself and create traffic to your blog.  Twitter is also a good source to promote but don’t get too tweet happy with announcing new posts- most of the people following you will also be subscribed to your site and you will be giving them a double whammy.

By using the concepts of attraction marketing and you will make your job that much easier.  You can also submit your post to relevant bookmarking sites and directories.

One of the easiest ways to promote your blog is to comment on other blogs especially those that use the comment luv plugin developed by Andy Bailey.  This is a perfect example of why headlines are so important.  With comment luv there is a line under your comment that links to your last blog post.  If your headline is intriguing you may be surprised by the number of clicks you get. (One tip here- if you are getting ready to publish a new post wait to make your comments until after you publish.  This gives you a fresh link especially if you have made a lot of comments since your last post).

Conclusion

Overall, it is clear that blogging can be very time consuming to those who take it seriously.  Bloggers that have learned how to take what started out as a fun past-time and turn it into a lucrative career have known this all along.  While every post doesn’t have to be a candidate for the Nobel prize you do have to be sure that you are using most, if not all, of these techniques in each one to gain the blogging success you are looking for.

The next time someone makes a comment about why it takes you so much time to write a little blog post you can just smile and think to yourself, blogging is so much more than just writing.
